To say that this year has been special would be putting it mildly. A year ago I packed up and left the city that had been home for nine years to make a fresh start in India. In the last year I’ve covered elections in India and Afghanistan, had lunch with Sri Lanka’s president, celebrated Easter with Christians in Orissa, gone fishing and picked tea (again in Sri Lanka), seen droughts and flooding, drank tea with the so called last Jew in Kabul, climbed mountains, learned to swim (sort of), and seen two of my pictures projected the size of a small house at the slide show at Visa Pour L’Image. Not a bad year.
It’s a year I could not have accomplished without the support of others. I have to thank the photo editors at Time, Newsweek, Bloomberg, AFP, Reuters, Getty Images, The Australian, Berlingske, Stern, The Economist, The Times of London and anyone else who liked my work and either gave me an assignment or published one of my pictures. I am especially thankful to the editors at the New York Times that kept me as part of the home town team despite being a world away. Most of the things I’ve done I owe to Patrick Witty, Jessie DeWitt, and Lonnie Schlien on the NYT travel and international desks. Thanks for giving me the chance.
I appreciate the correspondents (Jim, Lydia, Vickas, Aletta, Amanda, Line, and Heather to name a few) whose great ideas I’ve had the opportunity to illustrate. The icing on the cake though is the photo community I now find myself part of. My life in India is a happy one thanks to Adam, Sanjit, Suzanne, Karishma, Badris, Swoan, Anna-Maria, Kainaz, Rubenstein, Crouchie, Sumit, Romana, Findlay, Ann, Pedro, Kevin, Brian, Amy, Andy, and especially my brother Daniel Berehulak. It’s a community that took me in and inspired the best out of me. Lastly I am thankful for the friends and family back in the States that have always been in my corner.
Happy 2010.
Cheers,
Keith
